Los Angeles Clippers head coach Doc Rivers has been fined $15,000 by the NBA for directing verbal abuse toward an official and failing to leave the court in a timely manner after his ejection, the league announced Thursday.
The incident occurred late in the first overtime of the Clippers’ double-overtime loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday when referee Ken Mauer whistled Rivers for a technical foul for crossing midcourt to argue a call with referee Lauren Holtkamp. Rivers lost his cool and began yelling at Mauer, leading to a second technical and an automatic ejection.
“It was the damndest tech to give at that time,” Rivers said after the game. “What the league is going to fall back on, ‘He crossed the halfcourt.’ You’ll see tomorrow that’s what they’re going to say and we’re all going to know that that’s not the real reason.”
