Carl Edwards wins pole at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Carl Edwards won the pole position for Saturday’s Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway as Joe Gibbs Racing swept the top three spots in qualifying Friday.

Edwards turned a lap at 131.407 mph in the final round of qualifying to edge Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin, who ran 131.200.

“We didn’t make a qualifying run in practice,” Edwards said. “We leaned on my teammates for information.”

Edwards said there is a sense of the unknown about Saturday’s race because of changes BMS officials made to the track surface.

“I don’t know exactly what we’ll see in the race,” he said. “The Xfinity race (Friday night) will tell us a lot about what’s going to happen. We’ll all be watching. I’m very curious to see where the line goes – to see what develops tonight.”

Edwards also won the pole for the spring race at BMS, a race he won.
